Exercise is like most things in life: the more you put in, the more you get out. There’s a direct correlation between how much effort you put in during your workout and the physical and mental benefits you’ll get.
The problem is that, for many people, simply getting to the gym is considered an achievement, and it’s all too easy to settle into a low-intensity, quick workout before heading home.

Find Your Optimal Workout Time
We understand that some people only have a small window in which they can go to the gym. However, if you have a choice of when you work out, then we’d recommend working to find out your optimal workout time. Some people work out best in the mornings, others in the afternoon or evening. Think about when you have the most energy, and make sure you’re going to the gym during that time.
Give Your Body What It Needs
You can’t pour from an empty cup. Your body will need to have the energy it needs to work out well. Eating a large, carb-heavy meal 2 – 3 hours before your workout, and a small snack 60 minutes before, will set you up for a good workout. During the workout, consuming an energy sachet and plenty of water can help you to maintain a high level of intensity. Once you’ve finished, a protein shake (or protein-heavy meal) will give your body what it needs to repair and build muscle.
Speak to An Expert
Most people take the DIY approach to their gym workouts, especially at the beginning when they’re just getting used to spending time in the gym. At some point, however, it’s recommended to speak to an expert who can tell you exactly what you need to do to reach your fitness goals. Personal trainers are good because they provide the expert insights you need to optimise your workout. In some cases, you’ll find that you can actually work out less while also achieving better results. Remember: it’s not always about what you do in the gym, but rather how effectively you do it.
Make it Fun
The best workouts are the ones where you get into the flow and stay longer than usual. One way to encourage those workout days is to make your exercise routine more fun. Putting together a great workout playlist or looking up some fun podcasts can both help you get into a flow state.
Keep Progressing
Finally, try to avoid being too comfortable! You’ll make more progress if you switch up your routine and continue to increase the intensity. It’s all too easy to fall into the trap of doing the same workout for months on end; by mixing things up, you’ll be giving your body new challenges, which should ultimately result in better results.
